Used GPU comparison

RTX 4060 vs RTX 3070: newer features or older high-end speed?

The RTX 4060 and RTX 3070 look close on paper because both often appear with 8GB of VRAM. They are not close in the used market. One is a newer, efficient 1080p card with DLSS 3. The other is an older higher-tier GPU that still has a clear performance lead in many games.

Short answer

Buy the RTX 3070 for raw speed. Buy the RTX 4060 for efficiency and newer features.

If the cards are close in price and both are in good condition, the RTX 3070 is usually the stronger gaming buy. It was launched as a higher-tier card and still has the wider memory bus and raw shader power to show for it. The RTX 4060 makes sense when you want a newer low-power GPU, DLSS 3 Frame Generation, AV1 encoding, or a card that fits easily into a modest power supply.

Pick the RTX 4060 if...

you play mostly at 1080p, care about power use, want DLSS 3 or AV1, or prefer a newer card with simpler cooling needs.

Pick the RTX 3070 if...

you want higher FPS in traditional gaming, especially at 1440p, and your PSU and case can handle a bigger card.

Specs that actually matter

The RTX 4060 is based on NVIDIA's newer Ada Lovelace generation, while the RTX 3070 is an Ampere card from the previous generation. Newer does not automatically mean faster. The RTX 4060 has modern media features and excellent efficiency, but the RTX 3070 has much more raw hardware and a wider memory bus.

Spec RTX 4060 RTX 3070
Architecture NVIDIA Ada Lovelace NVIDIA Ampere
CUDA cores 3072 5888
Memory 8GB GDDR6, 128-bit 8GB GDDR6, 256-bit
Typical graphics power 115W 220W
Feature advantage DLSS 3 Frame Generation, AV1 encoder, lower power Higher raw gaming performance, stronger 1440p fit

Both cards commonly have 8GB of VRAM, so the real question is not “which has more memory?” It is whether you want the RTX 3070's wider bus and performance, or the RTX 4060's newer feature set and efficiency.

1080p and 1440p gaming

The RTX 4060 is built around efficient 1080p gaming. It is good for esports, lighter games and newer titles where DLSS support can help. It also runs cool and quiet in many partner designs because the power target is low.

The RTX 3070 is the faster gaming card. It has enough extra muscle to make a difference in demanding games, and it is the better fit for 1440p when settings are realistic. The 8GB VRAM limit can still matter in some modern games, but the RTX 3070 usually has more performance headroom than the RTX 4060 before that limit becomes the main problem.

1080p

RTX 4060 is sensible and efficient. RTX 3070 is faster if the price, condition and power draw are acceptable.

1440p

RTX 3070 is the better match. RTX 4060 can work with lowered settings or DLSS, but it is not a natural 1440p card.

DLSS, ray tracing, AV1 and creator features

This is where the RTX 4060 fights back. DLSS 3 Frame Generation can make supported games feel smoother when the base frame rate is already decent. The RTX 4060 also has an AV1 encoder, which is useful for streaming and recording workflows that support it.

The RTX 3070 still supports DLSS Super Resolution and NVIDIA's RTX software stack, but it does not get DLSS 3 Frame Generation. It can also be the better ray tracing card in raw performance terms, but heavy ray tracing at high settings can expose the 8GB VRAM limit on both cards. If you are buying mostly for modern frame-generation support, the RTX 4060 has the cleaner feature story. If you are buying for normal FPS, the RTX 3070 is still ahead.

Power, heat and system fit

The RTX 4060 is much easier to live with in smaller or cheaper systems. NVIDIA lists 115W typical graphics power, so many builds can run it without a PSU upgrade. That matters if you are updating an office PC, a compact case or a budget system where heat and power connectors are not guaranteed.

The RTX 3070 is closer to a traditional performance GPU. NVIDIA lists 220W typical graphics power, and partner cards can be large. Check card length, required PCIe power connectors and PSU quality before buying. A cheap RTX 3070 becomes a worse deal if it forces a rushed power supply replacement.

Used buying checks before choosing either card

The RTX 3070 has been on the market longer, so condition matters. Some cards have lived in hot gaming systems or mining rigs. That does not automatically make them bad, but vague listings deserve caution. The RTX 4060 is newer, so used examples may be cleaner, but you should still check warranty, photos and test evidence.

  • Ask for the exact model name and recent photos of the card.
  • Check fan noise, hotspot temperature and benchmark stability.
  • Confirm the RTX 3070 fits your case and power supply.
  • Do not pay RTX 3070 money for an RTX 4060 unless features matter.
  • Prefer listings with clear photos, original packaging or proof of purchase.
  • Use the original marketplace payment flow when buyer protection depends on it.

Pricing advice: what should cost more?

In a fair used-market comparison, the RTX 3070 should normally be worth more than the RTX 4060 because it is faster. The problem is that age, warranty and power use also have value. A dusty RTX 3070 with no testing proof is not automatically better than a clean RTX 4060 just because it benchmarks higher.

A practical rule: if both are clean and the RTX 3070 only costs a little more, buy the RTX 3070 for gaming. If the RTX 4060 is meaningfully cheaper, newer, quieter or better suited to your PSU, it becomes the safer everyday 1080p card. Do not treat DLSS 3 as a replacement for raw performance in every game; treat it as a useful extra when the game supports it well.

Specification references were checked against NVIDIA's official product pages. Real-world performance depends on the game, CPU, driver, memory, resolution, cooling and the exact partner model being sold.

FAQ

Is the RTX 3070 still worth buying used?

Yes, if the price and condition are right. It is still much faster than an RTX 4060 in many games, but you should check thermals, power requirements and whether the 8GB VRAM limit is acceptable for the games you play.

Does DLSS 3 make the RTX 4060 better than the RTX 3070?

Not by itself. DLSS 3 Frame Generation is useful in supported games, but it does not replace raw performance everywhere. For normal rasterized gaming, the RTX 3070 is generally stronger.

Which card is better for a small power supply?

The RTX 4060 is the safer choice for modest power supplies. Its low power draw makes it much easier to fit into budget and compact systems than the RTX 3070.
